Amy Winehouse Biography

Amy WinehouseKnown for being an English soul, R&B and jazz singer and songwriter, Amy Jade Winehouse was born on the 14th of September in 1983. She was born in Enfield, London to a jazz-loving Jewish family. Her father, Mitchell, was a taxi driver and her mother, Janis, was a pharmacist. She grew up with an older brother in the suburbs of Southgate. She attended Southgate School and later on, Ashmole School. At the tender age of ten, Winehouse was able to establish Sweet 'n' Sour, which was rap group that was short-lived. She founded this group together with her childhood friend, Juliette Ashby. At 12 years old, she had training at the Theatre School of Sylvia Young, however she was allegedly expelled for piercing her nose and for not applying herself at the age of 14. In 1997, along with the other children who attended the Sylvia Young School, she was able to do an appearance in one episode of The Fast Show. Later, she attended the BRIT School, which is located in Selhurst, Croydon.

For a while, she just had to settle playing around with her brother's guitar until she was able to receive her first guitar at the age of 13. She was then able to start writing her own music a year later. During that time, Winehouse dropped out of school, as she started to experiment with drugs. Soon after, though, she was able to begin working as a World Entertainment News Network showbiz journalist. She was able to do this while she also sang with a jazz band.

Soul singer Tyler James, who was her boyfriend back then, sent a demo tape to an Artists and Repertoire person, which ultimately led her to sign with the Island/Universal record label that was under the Company 19 Management of Simon fuller, as well as an EMI publishing deal.

Winehouse then hired the longtime band of Sharon Jones, a New York singer. This band was the Dap-Kings and she hired them to be her back up in the studio as well as on tour, which gave group a taste of the limelight.

Winehouse has been able to created massive media buzz aside from her singing. Due to the unique style that she has, one of which was her signature beehive hairstyle, se gained a lot of fans and imitators. She has also been the muse of a number of fashion designers, one of which was fashion industry mogul, Karl Lagerfeld. Additionally, her and her husband’s (Blake Fielder-Civil) struggle with addiction to drugs and alcohol, along with her self-destructive behavior, were regular tabloid news.
